Questions

What else do you like to do apart from reading and writing?

I really love music. My favourite band has always been Paramore but I’m also a big fan of My Chemical Romance, Pierce the Veil, New Year’s Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Panic! At the disco, Green Day… I listen to a lot of bands. I usually listen to music while I write. I’ve also written three of my own songs. They’re called Looking Back, There is light and Song of Hesperus. The song of Hesperus is actually from my book, Timeless, which I am yet to write. I also love science. Space in particular is absolutely fascinating. I also do a lot of drawing, even though I’m not very good at it.

How long does it take you to write a book?

I actually write books a lot faster than most authors. It only took me a month to write Forever Alone which is actually my longest book so far. Usually it takes two or three months to write a book.

What books do you like to read?

Anything, really. My favourite books are the Harry Potter series, but I’m also a huge fan of Shadowhunters by Cassandra Clare, and I also love Rick Riordan’s books. I also really like Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Oh, and I love Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder! Anything by Jennifer Niven is good as well, and I also think one of the most beautiful descriptions I’ve ever read was in the book “A sea of stars” by Kate Maryon.

When you start writing a book, do you know what’s going to happen in it?

Yes. The stories are always elaborately planned out in my head, and I know exactly what’s going to happen. Sometimes I add new characters as I write, it’s like meeting new friends whilst on a journey. But I know what’s going to happen, and sometimes I even write scenes in notebooks because I’m scared I’ll forget them. Although the original scenes from the notebooks are sometimes changed before I put them into the books and sometimes I even completely abandon the idea.

What made you name your book “Fire and Ice?”

The name of the book just came to me and I knew that was what it was going to be called before I even knew why I was calling it that. However, I know now. The fire represents love, passion, hope and determination. The ice represents loneliness, and misinterpretation. It could also be that fire and ice represent two of the characters in the book – fire represents Januari Winters and ice represents Amycus Derby.

What writing project are you planning next?

I’ve written four books now – Fire and Ice, Forever Alone, Heart on fire and The Kingdom and the Crown. The next book I will write is called Rosanna, and it follows the story of Rosanna Reynolds. She is from North Pearlshore in Rosamontis, Larenia. And one day, she gets kidnapped by pirates. Things change drastically for Rosanna, but she soon finds that this rough bunch of men aren’t necessarily what they seem. But is it possible for someone like Rosanna to live like this?

What are your major influences as an author?

I was inspired when I read the Harry Potter series for the first time. That was when I realised what I wanted to do. I read those books and I just knew that this was what I was going to do. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. And now, I have all the characters in my books, and they’re like friends to me. Some of the most precious things I have are my book characters. They’re always there, in my imagination, and I don’t know what I’d do without them.

How do you keep up your stamina when you are writing?

I love writing. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was seven. Also, the characters are like friends to me. It’s like they came to me to tell their stories. I’m the only one who really knows them, so I’m the only one who can really tell their stories. So I do everything I can to share their stories with the world, because I just keep telling myself that they deserve to be told. And if I don’t tell these stories, no one will. One of the saddest things in the world is a story that never gets told. If I don’t tell my stories, no one will ever have heard of Januari, Amycus, Loveday, Andromeda, Rosanna, Caroline… I could go on for a very long time. So I write not only for myself but for my characters. I do it for them, because they deserve to have their stories told.

Where do you get all your ideas?

I just suddenly think of ideas for stories at random moments. I had the idea for Fire and Ice while using an app to teach myself German. I had the idea for Rosanna in a history lesson. They’re all in my head already and I keep having new ideas. I have at least thirty stories in line for writing.
